In the late 19th century, a budding young musician by the name of Huddie William Ledbetter left his home in Harrison County, Texas after his father sought to discourage the boy’s artistic ambitions by referring to Huddie’s guitar as a “starvation box,” cursed to bring only poverty and famine. That young man would go on to have an unimaginably profound impact on music, becoming internationally recognized as folk blues pioneer Lead Belly. Over a hundred years later, Lead Belly’s musical lineage continues, and his story still provides inspiration for artists, including country outlaw and fellow Texan Dale Watson who is set to release a new acoustic album that puts Watson’s own starvation box front and center.
Starvation Box begins with the captivating title track, which Watson co-wrote with CMA award-winning songwriter Mike Henderson, of Chris Stapleton’s “Broken Halos” fame. The song rides a bluesy 12-string guitar riff backed by a sparse rhythm track that gives ample room for Watson’s leathery baritone voice.
As Watson explains, “Living in Marshall, TX, the area so influential to Lead Belly, I went down the Lead Belly rabbit hole. It led me to a 1957 Stella 12-string guitar just like the one Lead Belly had, which his father called a ‘starvation box.’ I knew I had to write that song as an ode to Lead Belly. What I wrote was ok but with Mike Henderson’s additions and of course, his slide guitar and harmonica, I think we came up with a fitting tribute that I hope people like.”

There was a POOL SITUATION in Nashville, TN, after Broken Bow Records MULTI-PLATINUM star Dustin Lynch took over the rooftop pool at Margaritaville Hotel Nashville on Saturday (6/10).
“I've done ‘Pool Situation’ parties for eight years at ‘Crash My Playa,’ then we had a successful Vegas takeover in 2021. Nashville finally has the hotels and population willing to sustain the ‘Pool Situation’ concept – I'd have probably done this a decade ago if I could in Music City. I think the time has arrived for this concept from an economic, cultural, social and music industry perspective,” Lynch shared with The Tennessean.
After launching the first Country music-themed full-weekend pool party of its kind in Sin City called DUSTIN LYNCH POOL SITUATION: VEGAS in June 2021, Lynch punched up all the “Party Mode” entertainment during CMA Fest’s 50th anniversary weekend with DUSTIN LYNCH POOL SITUATION: NASHVILLE. Grammy-nominated and Dove award-winning country artist Ty Herndon and the world's largest LGBTQ+ media advocacy organization, GLAAD, joined forces once again to present a spectacular evening of music and unity at The Concert for Love & Acceptance. Held on Wednesday, June 7, at the esteemed Wildhorse Saloon in Nashville, the star-studded event showcased a powerful coalition of artists and celebrities who are dedicated to accelerating acceptance for the LGBTQ+ community.
The 2023 Concert for Love & Acceptance featured an exceptional lineup of talent, including Ty Herndon, Chrissy Metz, Maddie & Tae, Terri Clark, Pam Tillis, Sam Williams, Brooke Eden, Chapel Hart, Desmond Child, Billy Gilman, Jamie Floyd, Brandon Stansell, Bryan Ruby, Wendy Moten, Shelly Fairchild, Justin Fabus, Auti, Autumn Nicholas, Jada Cato, Jason Catron, and Matt Bloyd.

The Country Radio Broadcasters, Inc. has announced legendary country music artist Barbara Mandrell as the 2023 CRB Artist Career Achievement Award recipient. Mandrell was honored during the Country Radio Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony, on July 10 at the Virgin Hotel Nashville.
CRB/CRS Board President Kurt Johnson comments, “We are honored to present the Artist Career Achievement Award to Barbara Mandrell, a true icon in the music industry. Her incredible talent, dedication, and passion have inspired generations of artists and fans alike. It is a privilege to recognize her outstanding contributions and celebrate her remarkable career.”
Barbara Mandrell's exceptional musical talent was evident from a young age. Born into a musical family in Houston, Texas, she began playing the accordion before she could even read and was a steel guitar prodigy by the age of eleven. Her incredible abilities caught the attention of "Uncle" Joe Maphis, who invited her to join his show at the Showboat Hotel in Las Vegas after seeing her perform at a trade show. This led to touring with The Johnny Cash Show and embarking on a successful tour across Asia with her family band.
Despite stepping away from the music industry after marrying in 1967, Mandrell's passion for music never waned. She returned to the stage as a solo artist and went on to achieve great success in Nashville, scoring a series of No.1 hits and becoming one of the most-awarded country acts in history. Along with her sisters, she also had a celebrated television career that began in the 1980s with the NBC variety show, Barbara Mandrell and the Mandrell Sisters.
Mandrell officially retired from the music industry in 1997 and has since been inducted into multiple halls of fame for her remarkable career, unyielding faith, and love of country. Despite the demands of show business, she remains true to her love of God, family, and country, and is truly the embodiment of a consummate entertainer.
The CRB Career Achievement Award is presented to an individual artist or act who has made a significant contribution to the development and promotion of country radio and country music through their leadership, engagement, and creativity. Previous Artist Career Achievement recipients include Trisha Yearwood, Keith Urban, Rascal Flatts, Vince Gill, Randy Travis, George Strait, and the Judds, among others.
Also honored during the Country Radio Hall of Fame are six exceptional radio professionals - four off-air broadcasters and two on-air personalities. Pam Green, Charlie Morgan, Wade Jessen, and John Willyard are among the distinguished off-air honorees, while Trish Biondo and Dollar Bill Lawson are recognized for their outstanding on-air contributions.

Runaway June is back with new music, sharing the boot-stomping, fire-worthy "Make Me Wanna Smoke" everywhere today (5/19). The trio's first release since signing with Quartz Hill Records, "Make Me Wanna Smoke" is instantly relatable to anyone who's ever been in a relationship that's not quite over, but probably should be.

"Make Me Wanna Smoke" was written by Jason Sellers, Ella Langley and Bobby Hamrick and captures a conflicted heart struggling with love it can’t quit – even when it feels like a bad habit. Produced by Mickey Jack Cones, the percussive and rhythmic track keeps Runaway June's three-part harmonies front and center as band members Jennifer Wayne, Natalie Stovall and Stevie Woodward can't help but feel a pull toward someone they know they're better off leaving behind. "'Make Me Wanna Smoke' has immediately become our favorite song to play live," Runaway June shares. "It's slinky and fun and such an empowering way to embrace the back-and-forth nature of a relationship that may not be the best for you. We're so excited to share this one!" Runaway June exclusively debuted "Make Me Wanna Smoke" last week (5/10) on The Bobby Bones Show, where Wayne, Stovall and Woodward chatted with Bones and gave him all the details on the song, calling it "really exciting" and "very edgy."
The band's most recent release was the heartbreak rocker "BROKEN HEARTS (DO BROKEN THINGS)," which scored mentions from Billboard, Entertainment Tonight, E! News, CMT and more.
